As a multidisciplinary artist hailing from San Antonio, Texas, I've traversed the creative landscape for eight enriching years. My journey as a woman of Mexican descent, reared in the embrace of poverty without the luxuries of plentiful resources or the digital realm, imbues my work with a unique perspective. Rooted in nostalgia, internet culture, and an incisive examination of capitalism's grip on our society, my art serves as a prism refracting these themes into playful yet profound reflections.
Spanning digital media, painting, collage, drawing, and textiles, my portfolio embodies a spirited fusion of mediums as I make work under the name, “Acidwinzip.” The name was a choice made for me by an internet subculture name generator in 2016. Through this diverse array of artwork, I create commentary that juxtaposes whimsy with sobering truths. Despite their weighty origins, my creations exude an air of levity, inviting viewers into a world where critique wears a grin.
My fascination with the concept of comfort—once an elusive dream growing up in poverty—is a driving force behind my artistic exploration. Comfort, I've discovered, manifests in myriad forms, from the bliss of ignorance to the indulgence of excess. Through my work, I extend an invitation for introspection, urging viewers to scrutinize their own reflections and unearth the shadows lurking beneath the veneer of contentment.Central to my practice is the dialogue forged between artwork and audience, a discourse that extends beyond the confines of the canvas or screen. By interrogating the personas we craft online and in public, my art becomes a mirror, inviting viewers to confront their own projections and perceptions.
In essence, my art is a playful yet poignant voyage through the landscapes of memory, culture, and society, guided by the compass of curiosity, compassion and, of course, humor.
BIO:
Ursula Zavala is a multidisciplinary artist hailing from the Southside of San Antonio, Texas. Their work combines elements of nostalgia, internet culture, and an incisive examination of capitalism's grip on our society to spark a dynamic dialogue surrounding contemporary issues. Zavala's artistic ethos thrives on the interplay of opposites—blending the hard with the soft, the fun with the somber, and the chaotic with the ordered.
Under the moniker “Acidwinzip”—a name bestowed upon them by an internet subculture name generator in 2016—Zavala fearlessly explores the intersections of creativity and identity. Their career started in the internet subculture of “Vaporwave,” where the artist became synonymous with the music due to the many album covers she made for many upcoming artists. Zavala was presented with the opportunity to exhibit digital work in 2017 at the former Provenance Gallery in the 1906 Arts Complex on S. Flores. From there, their involvement with the local art community has skyrocketed.
With artist residencies at Mantle Art Space and Clamp Light Studios and Gallery, Zavala has honed their craft and enriched their artistic practice, showing in many exhibitions throughout the city and developing a group of collectors. Zavala navigates the realm of mixed media, seamlessly weaving together digital design, painting, textiles, and collage to create something fresh and focused on the realities that plague our surroundings under capitalism. They are currently serving as a gallery assistant at Not For You Gallery, nestled within the vibrant confines of the Blue Star Arts, where they also occasionally work from and exhibit.
